Fan Perspective: Five Major Errors that Ruined the…

There are probably hundreds of plays that cost the Chicago Bears their shot at a postseason trip for the 2011 season. Of course it’s easy to blame it on injuries and while I want to include one that is not what ruined the Bears’ season.

Jay Cutler’s Injury:

I did say we wouldn’t count injuries. This wasn’t an “injury” as much as it was a “play.” And it was a very dumb play at that. Wouldn’t it be fair to say that Cutler’s attempt to tackle the man who intercepted his pass was “not smart?” Why did he do it?

In the NFC Championship last year Jay Cutler was considered less than a man because he sat out much of the game and those who are self-proclaimed “experts” said he should have stayed in the game despite having to obey the coaches.

It is for that reason I believe that Cutler went after the defensive player who intercepted the pass. I think he wanted to prove he had “heart.” As a result the Bears are not in the playoffs. Quarterbacks have no business trying to tackle people. Keep a close eye on those who have won Super Bowls.

Marion Barber runs out of bounds against Denver:

Perhaps this loss to the Broncos was one of the saddest losses in Chicago Bears’ history. The Bears controlled the game completely and could have run the clock out at the end. Barber ran out of bounds and gave the Denver Broncos hope. It also took the Bears’ record down to (7-6).

Underestimating the Kansas City Chiefs-”Hail Mary”:

When Coach Lovie Smith went for a first down on fourth and a yard I had a bad feeling and I was right. Going into the game there was an aura of arrogance on the part of the Bears because Kansas City wasn’t doing well and the Bears were at home.

However play after play and failure after failure kept the Chiefs close and sure enough at the end of the first half the Kansas City Chiefs completed a ridiculous “Hail Mary.”

Roy Williams dropped pass in the Kansas City game:

Roy Williams was obtained by the Bears to be a tough big receiver. He dropped a lot of balls in 2011 but none bigger than the pass near the Kansas City goal line that could have tied the game in the fourth quarter.

Bears failure to understand their quarterback situation:

After two Caleb Hanie losses Chicago should have been making some kind of deal. The coaching staff is too slow.

And now, despite having a record of (7-3) after 10 games with an easy schedule, the Bears will watch the playoffs from home.

I wonder if we’ll ever try something new.

NFL Injury Update: Chicago Bears’ Devin Hester…

The Chicago Bears won’t be home for Christmas. However, if they don’t find a way to upset the Green Bay Packers on Christmas night? They’ll be home for the playoffs.

Bears head coach Lovie Smith received more discouraging news in regards to the health of the remaining players on the Bears’ roster. Devin Hester has always been a threat as a return specialist against the Packers’ suspect special-teams coverage units. The Bears need him because of injuries and legal issues that have decimated the receiving unit.

Hester missed the entire week of practice with an ankle injury and is listed as questionable as of December 23, 2011. Smith claimed that the chances of Hester playing weren’t looking very good. The injury would force Earl Bennett into the role of punt return specialist.

Here are a few other key players who may be sidelined for the Bears as they fight to keep their slim playoff hopes alive on Christmas night.

Jay Cutler (Out)

Jay Cutler is still recovering from surgery that he had on a broken thumb on his throwing hand. Following a 7-3 start with Cutler, the Bears have lost four consecutive games with Caleb Hanie as his replacement. Josh McCown will get the start as he’s only completed two passes since the 2007-08 season.

Matt Forte (Out)

Matt Forte suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Forte has been ruled out for this game. He was leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage before the injury. This will force McCown to make some plays in the passing game.

Johnny Knox (Out)

The Chicago Bears lost their go-to receiver after he was placed on injured reserve with a back injury earlier this week. Knox would’ve been the return specialist had Hester not played. Bears special-teams coordinator Dave Toub will likely rely on Earl Bennett and Armando Allen if Hester can’t play.

Marion Barber (Doubtful)

Along with Matt Forte, Marion Barber is also expected to miss this game with a calf injury. Kahlil Bell and Armando Allen would receive the majority of carries in their absences. Allen may also handle the kickoff return duties if Hester can’t play. This will be Bell’s second career start.

Lance Briggs (Questionable)

Lance Briggs was a limited participant during practice on Friday. Henry Melton and Briggs are game-time decisions.

Christmas Miracles that Are More Probable Than the…

The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears will face off on Christmas Night during the 2011-12 NFL season. The Packers are coming off their first loss of the season in a 19-14 upset from the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers’ offense became stagnant after they lost three of their four best offensive tackles. They’re also without their starting running back (James Starks) and go-to wide receiver (Greg Jennings).

The Bears defense has always been tough against the Packers ‘offense. Since 2009, they’ve held the Packers’ offense to fewer than 22 points in five of the past six meetings. The Packers only scored 10 points in last season’s regular-season finale.

Now if you’re confident enough in the Bears shutting out the Packers? You might get a rebate that covers the purchase of a car.

A car dealership called Sawicki Motors in Rochelle, Illinois, has started a promotion. They’ll rebate the purchase price of any automobile that’s bought from their car lot from December 16, 2011, to December 23. The catch is that the Packers can’t score any points against the Bears on Christmas night.

The promotion has done what general manager Ron Matula wanted: increase exposure for Sawicki Motors. Regardless, there are many improbabilities in Chicago sports that would happen before the Bears’ hold the Packers to zero points.

Santa Claus might need some help from Matt Flynn with this list of Christmas miracles.

The Chicago Bears And Green Bay Packers Will Combine For Two Points

The Pro Football Hall of Fame recognizes five games that ended in a 2-0 score. The Bears and Packers were involved in the last two games during the 1930s. The Packers had a 2-0 victory over the Bears on October 16, 1932. The Bears defeated the Packers 2-0 on September 18, 1938.

The Chicago Bears Will Score Exactly Four Points

The Racine Legion had some strange scores against Chicago teams during the 1923 NFL season. The Chicago Bears handed them their first loss of the season with a 3-0 loss. However, that wasn’t as bizarre as the Legion’s 10-4 victory later in that season against the Chicago Cardinals.

Maybe the Cardinals hit a grand slam? The Chicago Cubs have a better chance of hitting a grand slam in this game when compared to the Bears’ ability of shutting out the Packers’ offense.

Josh McCown Will Have More Touchdown Passes Than Aaron Rodgers

Most of them will be completed to players on the Packers’ defense.

Shawn Slocum Will Outcoach Dave Toub

Packers special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum’s job is easy since he has the NFC’s leading vote-getter for special teams (via fan votes), Jarrett Bush. I’d just love to know why stuff like this happens.

Barack Obama Will Trade Aaron Rodgers To The Chicago Bears Via An Executive Order

President Obama has probably learned that a certificate of stock in the Packers is more useless than the United States Congress or the Electoral College when there are more than two parties involved in a presidential election.

Chicago Will Host The Summer Olympics

Just not anytime before 2024.

If Lovie Smith Didn’t Think This Was A Must-win Game For The Chicago Bears

I wonder if Lovie Smith would now consider that divisional loss against the Detroit Lions as a “Must-win game?”

Terrell Owens Will Sign With The Chicago Rush

With Jerry Angelo’s inability to find a go-to wide receiver for Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler over the past decade, it’d be funny if the best wide receiver in Chicago happened to play in the Arena Football League. An AFL tandem of Roy Williams and Terrell Owens might have some success with the Chicago Rush. Maybe.

Albert Pujols Will Still Haunt The Chicago Cubs

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. That would mean that the Cubs are winning National League pennants with Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. I wonder who fans of the St. Louis Cardinals would cheer for in a World Series between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Cubs?

Commissioner Scrooge (Roger Goodell) Won’t Fine Anyone This Holiday Season

Happy Holidays!

Sam Hurd Will Have a “Johnny Jolly Christmas”

The sad part is that I wouldn’t be surprised if they were busted again if they were given another opportunity.

Brett Favre Will Come Out Of Retirement And Play For The Chicago Bears

The feud between Ted Thompson and Favre is tied at two. Time to settle this once and for all!

Jerry Angelo Will Win A Super Bowl As General Manager Of The Chicago Bears

Some Bears fans might argue that this has the same probability of happening as the Packers’ offense getting shut out or the Bears having any playoff hopes remaining after Christmas night:

No chance.

Joshua Huffman grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as a Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs enthusiast. His favorite Packer moments include Super Bowl XXXI, XLV, and Al Harris interception return following Matt Hasselbeck’s “We’re gonna score” comments. As a Packers and Cubs fan, he suffered through Steve Bartman and “4th & 26″ in a span of three months.

Chicago Bears Lose Johnny Knox and Chris Conte for…

The NFL season is just getting worse and worse for the Chicago Bears. For a season that was recently full of brimming hope and potential just four weeks ago, the Bears have since gone 0-4 (Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks), lost their starting quarterback in Jay Cutler, their starting running back in Matt Forte, and now they’ve lost wide receiver Johnny Knox and rookie safety Chris Conte. This turn of events really has been staggering.

First off, Johnny Knox’s injury was extremely scary. I’m certainly no doctor, but when he went down and I saw the replay a few times, I thought he was done playing football forever. You don’t ever want to see a player get hurt, but let’s be honest, how many of us had dire concern for Jay Cutler because he broke his thumb? Nah, we were more concerned with how it affected the Bears. Knox’s injury is different. That was the type of injury that makes you cringe and genuinely worry about someone —despite them being a distant athlete who you’ll probably never meet, much less have a relationship with. It was good to see that the back surgery to stabilize a vertebra went well and his possibility of playing football again remains intact.

The Bears also lost rookie safety Chris Conte to an ankle injury. While the Bears playoff chances have seemingly been left by the wayside, this is a significant loss for them. Early on this season, the Bears defense was dreadful. This was largely in part to awful safety play from Chris Harris (later released) and Brandon Meriweather. When Conte and Major Wright were sharing time with Meriweather, the safety play improved greatly. Craig Steltz has been playing rather well, too. During his playing time, Conte has given the impression the Bears may have found a long-term solution at safety. He’s looked capable, hard-nosed, and just flat out good.

The big picture is that Johnny Knox’s surgery went well and that his football future looks existent —something I wasn’t sure of after the injury happened. Knox’s injury is just the icing on the cake for season that has turned disastrous so quickly.

Fan Perspective: Bears’ Loss to Seahawks Not Due…

If you want to you can keep blaming the injuries to the Chicago Bears for their sad state of affairs. You can say the loss of Jay Cutler, Matt Forte and now Johnny Knox have left the Bears helpless; the fact is there are always excuses.

You see, what injuries do are point to weaknesses of a team that are hidden when good players are in the game.

I’ve been a Bears’ fan for 55-years as well as a middle school coach and while I don’t pretend to be the final word on the game of football I think I know a few things.

Chicago Bears’ quarterbacks:

You aren’t really going to blame the season on Caleb Hanie are you? We had Kyle Orton, Rex Grossman and Jay Cutler long before him who gave games away with interceptions. Why did this occur?

It occurred for two reasons. The quarterbacks were learning to play in the Chicago system and also had pretty bad offensive line protection. However face it; the Bears have failed to develop quarterbacks.

The Chicago Bears’ Offensive line:

Chicago’s offensive line doesn’t give protection to its quarterbacks. Orton and Grossman just died in the pocket while Cutler and Hanie have tried to move in the same way as Aaron Rodgers does. They aren’t Aaron Rodgers.

My point is that the Bears have failed season after season to develop an offensive line. I know, I know; they played in the NFC Championship Game last year, right? Check out the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of the offensive line over last season.

The Bears’ “all or nothing” players:

Years ago it was Walter Payton. Now it is Devin Hester. What it equals is a player whose lack of presence cuts the Bears’ chances of victory to an embarrassing percentage. Hester wasn’t in the Seahawk’s game much.

The Bears’ coaching staff:

Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli was the Head Coach of the Detroit Lions when they went (0-16). Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz can’t continually run the ball; he has to pass.

Head Coach Lovie Smith just doesn’t have the creativity to respond to mid-game or mid-season problems.

The Bears led the Seahawks at halftime today, Dec. 18, by the score of 14-7. Caleb Hanie was able to run the ball. Seattle made coaching adjustments but the Bears could not, losing 38-14.

Last week the Bears led 10-0 the entire game against the Broncos before collapsing. It was the coaching.

To make matters even worse, the coaches haven’t learned that words (or “vows”) don’t win games.

It is true that sports are played from the waist up as much as the waist down and the Bears have proven over the years their mental game is routinely weak.

Fan Perspective: Chicago Bears Coaches Gave Game…

I’m a 55-year fan of the Chicago Bears and middle school coach. I’m pretty sure the Bears will be watching the playoffs from the comfort of their overpaid for homes.

To say I am embarrassed by their loss to Denver yesterday, Dec. 11 would be a woeful understatement. To say I am ashamed of the Bears’ organization couldn’t possibly do justice to the way I feel.

Don’t blame Marion Barber:

There are a whole lot of guys on the Bears. When Barber went out of bounds and fumbled he was doing what he always does. He was running with every ounce of energy in his body.

The Bears’ offensive line:

We don’t really have one. Well at least not in the sense of pass protection. We have picked up where we were some time ago with Jay Cutler. We just provided a “Sack-O-Rama” show only this time the victim was Caleb Hanie.

The Bears’ receivers:

I don’t even want to talk about them.

Bears’ Defense’s Disrespect of Tebow:

It’s one thing to lose a game in a shameful way and get down on yourself but an entirely different thing to take away the accomplishment of the other team. Too bad Brian Urlacher had to cheap shot Tebow by saying “He’s a good running back.”

The Bears’ Coaches:

As angry as I am with the Bears I really think the reason they lost was poor coaching. The Bears have shown all season they can’t get plays out to the field on time. They have trouble getting rhythms because they always have to take timeouts.

However I must ask you why Mike Martz continually reverted to the pass even after the run worked, the offensive line couldn’t prevent sacks and the receivers were dropping balls anyway.

My saddest moment came when I read a comment by Head Coach Lovie Smith. He said, “This one definitely feels like it hurts a little bit more” when referring to the loss.

That seems like a pretty mild comment when your team has probably been knocked out of the playoffs.

The coaches should have had the end of the game scenario set. They didn’t and the team signed the game over.

Too bad coaches and players aren’t paid on results.

With Endless Criticism Swirling, Denver Broncos…

As a Chicago Bears fan, I won’t lie: the Bears game against the Denver Broncos was one of the toughest games I’ve ever had to watch. The collapse of the Bears, the ramifications to the season based on the loss, having to listen to another week of how Tim Tebow is forever changing the NFL, and a few others all contributed to making that loss so hard to swallow. However, all personal thoughts about the future of where Tebow will fit aside, I say this to Denver Broncos fan nation: enjoy it.

I’m sure you all are; as you should be. The criticism of the team —Tebow specifically— comes from endless sources for endless amounts of reasons —some potentially valid, others not at all. After all, you team is the one sitting atop the AFC West, your team is the one that has playoff hopes, and your team is the one with excitement around it. Enjoy it.

I write this as a Bears fan not because of what happened Sunday evening in Denver, but because we in Bears nation know what it feels like to have our team endlessly undermined regardless of performance. I’m coming to you from an organization that has a dreadful history at the quarterback position. In 2001, the Bears went 13-3 —due in part to a tremendous defense. All season, the Bears were trashed, made fun of, and given no respect because their offense was pretty bad. Now, they lost in the playoffs, but this was a totally legitimate team worthy of the record they had. There are other examples as well.

I’m not saying Tim Tebow is going to go on to be something magnificent—it’s entirely too early to be thinking about stuff like that. The point is that the Denver Broncos are 7-1 since he took over and have gone from a 1-4 disaster to an 8-5 contender. Time will solve all of our questions about Tim Tebow and his legitimacy, but for now Denver Broncos fans, you don’t have to answer to anyone. Enjoy the ride.

Chicago Bears, Without Cutler and Forte,To Face…

The 2011 NFL seasons for the Denver Broncos and the Chicago Bears couldn’t be more different at this point. The Broncos, behind second-year quarterback Tim Tebow and a much improved defense, have gotten better with every game since Tebow took over in Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins. They’re making a surprising playoff run at this late stage of the season.

The Chicago Bears, on the other hand, are seeing their playoff hopes fall apart in recent weeks after losing Jay Cutler to season-ending surgery to repair a fractured thumb. If things weren’t bad enough for the Bears with the loss of their quarterback, the loss of star running back Matt Forte to a sprained MCL has further crippled the offense. After going 7-3 to start the season, the Bears have lost their last two games in a most pitiful fashion and don’t look like they can win another game with the crew they have on the field now.

There are two possible ways that this game can go on Sunday. One possibility is that the Broncos finally expand their offensive scheme and open things up like they did against Minnesota in an attempt to score a few touchdowns in the first half. The Broncos are actually a team perfectly suited to protecting leads late in game rather than having to come from behind. With a strong defense and a rapidly improving running game, the Broncos are the kind of team that should be protecting leads in the fourth quarter and not scrambling to try and put points on the board at that point. Against the offensively hapless Bears, a solid two-touchdown lead should be all they need to win the game.

The other possibility is that the Bears find a way to win this game. The Bears currently have the eighth-ranked rushing defense in the NFL, allowing just 99.8 yards per game. They also have lots of team speed on defense which should prevent Tim Tebow from getting out on the edge and gaining valuable yards. If the Bears can hold the Broncos running attack to minimal yards and find a way to get a lead, the Broncos might unleash Tebow to pass a little earlier in the game than they normally have.

That could easily benefit the Bears as they are capable of grabbing several turnovers in a relatively short period of time in any particular game. The defense has been largely responsible for why Chicago has a +7 turnover differential (3rd in the NFL) despite the six interceptions that Hanie himself has thrown in the past two games. If Tebow underestimates the speed of players such as Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs in the short field, then the Bears could potentially give Tebow his first multiple-turnover game as a starter in 2011.

Ultimately, I think that the Bears defense is quite capable of controlling the Broncos offense. Unfortunately, the Broncos defense is equally (or more) likely to be able to control the Bears offense. This game could come down to a couple big plays on defense. The team that wins the turnover battle will most likely come out on top in this game.

Julie is a lifelong Chicago Bears fan living in Denver. The Broncos are her second favorite team, and she has admittedly begun to believe that Tim Tebow could be the Broncos starter in 2012. That story at least distracts her from the mess that the Bears’ season has turned into.

Fan Perspective: Chicago Bears’ Fan Says Tim Tebow…

I’ve been a Chicago Bears’ fan 55-plus years now as well as a middle school football and basketball coach. My Bears will be taking on Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos this Sunday, Dec. 11. Oh my, what a story it is and I’m one fan who couldn’t be more disgusted by the overall comments by many players, fans and announcers about Tebow.

Tim Tebow’s inability to play quarterback:

If you’re a football fan you’ve heard all about Tebow and his “inability to pass.” He supposedly doesn’t have the tools to play the position. The Denver Broncos have had to change, to some degree, their offensive operation to employ Tebow’s primarily college skills in a professional environment. Yet somehow this “quarterback quack” has taken a sad team that was (1-4) and led them to the top of their division winning six of seven games. Here I thought winning was the whole idea.

Denver vs. Minnesota, Dec. 4:

Over the course of the last few games commentators have indicated the main reason Denver has won is because of some type of “Tebow fourth-quarter magic” and a good defense. In other words keep the Broncos close and give Tebow a chance to catch a late break.

Interestingly enough against the Vikings last week the Denver defense didn’t do so well and Tim Tebow proved, at least to this fan, he can lead a team with his arm as well as his legs.

Tim Tebow’s spirituality:

Of course nothing brings more criticism than Tim Tebow’s outspokenness about his faith. However how many people take the time to examine his background? He was born to Baptist missionary parents in the Philippines. Further he was expected to be a stillborn child. That just might make someone very thankful and certainly might explain his exuberance.

The hypocrisy of many fans and other NFL players:

Tim Tebow is criticized for his statements about his faith that he makes at every opportunity. Yet I wish I’d get a dime each time a quarterback raises two fingers towards heaven after a touchdown pass or a receiver goes down on one knee after a catch in the end zone. In fact many players, our own Devin Hester being one, point to “God” prior to receiving a kickoff or punt. What are they “saying?” Is it different just because they aren’t verbalizing it? Further I have never heard Tebow fail to quickly thank his teammates rather than taking all the glory like so many “stars” do.

Here’s the deal:

Tim Tebow is a leader. He won a National Championship in college not to mention the Heisman Trophy. He took the (1-4) Broncos team, got their trust, and gave them confidence.

Tebow has accomplished this with a method that is different, so far. However every week he becomes a little more orthodox.

Will Tim Tebow become a legend? You can ask that same question about the majority of the quarterbacks in the NFL. We don’t know the answer. I will say that people in general just can’t appreciate or even accept change even when it’s effective.

However when my Bears play the Broncos I won’t be taking the game lightly and I suggest to you this league will not be taking Tim Tebow lightly for a long time. He is too dedicated. And I hate to be the one to tell you this: He doesn’t care what you think.

Brett Favre Has No Interest in Chicago Bears or…

Will the spirit of Brett Favre(notes) ever die in the media? Probably not within the next ten years.

There are numerous reports that suggested that Favre would listen to the Chicago Bears if they contacted him after the injury to Jay Cutler(notes) and the poor performances of Caleb Hanie(notes) in his first two starts. Following a 7-3 start, the Bears have lost their past two games as Hanie tossed six interceptions in that span. The Bears scored three points en route to a 10-3 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on December 4, 2011.

Favre has denied those reports and called them inaccurate. He claims that he hasn’t been contacted by any team nor has he contacted anyone. Favre is enjoying his retirement and spending time with his family.

The Bears have basically said the same thing. Head coach Lovie Smith told reporters that he was sticking with the quarterbacks that were currently on the roster. There isn’t enough time for Favre to learn the offense and develop some chemistry with his receivers. It may not even help that much seeing how poor the Bears’ offensive line is.

I’m one of those Packer fans who, while disappointed in his decision to play with the Minnesota Vikings, still respects what Favre accomplished for the Packers for 16 seasons. I always felt like the Packers had a respectable chance of competing for the playoffs with him at the helm. While he’s made some questionable decisions outside of football, I can’t discredit what he meant to the franchise.

I can understand Favre wanting to get back at Ted Thompson. I don’t feel like playing for the Vikings was the right way to go about that because it’s a slap in the face to Packer fans and the legacy that he built in Green Bay. But no harm was done; it’s a lot easier to “Forgive-and-forget” after that interception from Tracy Porter(notes).

Now if Favre wanted be dead to me? He would try to be the knight in shining armor who came to the rescue for the Bears once their quarterback went down during a playoff push.

But that won’t happen. Favre will never agree to be a player for the Bears no matter how many hearsay reports are made. It’d be even more foolish when one considers the situation with the Houston Texans. That’d be a more favorable situation for him as they have one of the NFL’s best run-offenses, defenses and wide receivers in Andre Johnson(notes).

Joshua Huffman grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula as a Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs enthusiast. His favorite Packer moments include Super Bowl XXXI, XLV, and Al Harris(notes) interception return following Matt Hasselbeck’s(notes) “We’re gonna score” comments. As a Packers and Cubs fan, he suffered through Steve Bartman and “4th & 26″ in a span of three months.

Chicago Bears Prepare for Tim Tebow and Denver…

I’ve given up trying to figure out Tim Tebow(notes) and company.

I’ll readily admit that I’ve been critical of Tebow and that I continue to be in my local circles. However, the time is fast approaching (if it’s not already here) when I’m going to have to just bite my tongue and admit whatever he’s doing in Denver is working; even if it’s unorthodox. Last week’s win not withstanding, it’s been well documented how rough his numbers have been. They still make me question if he can be considered a long term solution, but as long as he wins, he will be. And, like any other quarterback, we can assume he’ll get better as he plays more. Combine that with the raised play of the Broncos around him, suddenly, we have to look at Denver as a legitimate force with which to be reckoned.

That force is what the Chicago Bears are going to be trying to deal with this week when they travel to Denver. Two weeks ago, I would have said this was going to be a Chicago Bears victory —even considering Tebow’s success. But with the Bears becoming totally inept on offense with injuries to Jay Cutler(notes) and Matt Forte(notes), things get a little hazier.

That being said, I still think a good game is brewing. The momentum is undoubtedly on the side of Denver. In fact, whatever force that is has gone well beyond normal, everyday momentum. However, getting caught up in the emotional aspect of the game sometimes makes us overlook the logical ones.

The Bears defense has been exceptionally good. If it weren’t for that fluky touchdown during the Kansas City Chiefs game, I’m not sure Kansas City would have scored more than the three points they had. Also, the Bears defense has a long history of being exceptionally well built to deal with mobile quarterbacks. Julius Peppers(notes) and Henry Melton(notes) have specifically been making life miserable for quarterbacks. These are things working against the Denver Broncos.

However, the Bears currently can’t score and Denver’s defense has been pretty alright since Tebow took over. This leads me to believe a low scoring game is headed our way on Sunday. Unless Caleb Hanie(notes) can figure out a way to get at least a little offensive momentum brewing, it’s hard to pick the Bears, no matter what the defense does.

Fan Take: Why the Chicago Bears Should Stay Away…

The Chicago Bears are on their last legs—literally.

Brett Favre is still deciding if he will return for another season in the NFL. His offseason ankle surgery may play a big role in that decision.
Wikimedia Commons

With quarterback Jay Cutler(notes) sidelined with a broken finger and running back Matt Forte(notes)—who should have gotten paid weeks ago, I might add—out with a knee sprain, it didn’t take long for someone to mention that one former quarterback from Hattiesburg, Miss.

You know, that one guy who played in Green Bay for a long time, then went to New York, then ended his career in Minnesota—or so we thought. Now, Brett Favre(notes) has been said to be interested in the Bears’ quarterback job.

Well, that’s if the Bears decide to risk backlash from their faithful fans and call up a guy who used to hate playing against them when he was wearing green and yellow in the NFC North.

I don’t see it happening, for a few reasons.

First of all, Favre is up their in age. He is 42, and the last time NFL fans saw him he was barely walking straight in his final go-round with the Vikings. He is not getting any younger and he can’t take a hit as well as he could five or ten years ago, and with essentially no running game, Favre would take a beating.

Then there’s the public perception of having Favre on your football team.

The circus has swirled around Favre more in the past five years than in all his other years combined, bitterly leaving Green Bay in a move that made Aaron Rodgers(notes) the starter. (How did that work out for Packers GM Ted Thompson?) Favre then rode his tractor, er, car, to the Big Apple and had a pretty decent season with the Jets. An injury ruined his time there, but he wasn’t done.

The 2009 season was a magical one for Favre, posting great numbers on what many considered the NFC’s best team, or at least close to it. But a costly Favre interception (and he does hold the all-time interception mark in NFL history) ruined the Vikings’ chances of playing in another Super Bowl and gave way for the skeptics to come out once more and say that was everything he had in his tank.

And they were pretty much right. The Vikings struggled mightily in 2010 and Favre couldn’t even finish the season.

After all that, the bitter escape and constantly being ridiculed by the public, Favre’s name pops up again because, well, we all know he loves toying around professional franchises and media members. Favre was Tebow before Tebow, and Favre does make Tebow look like a saint in many regards. No. 4 has a reputation that has taken a few too many hits in recent years, and the NFL is a what have you done for me lately-type league.

The Bears have come out and said they aren’t interested. For some reason I think Favre will stay retired. As a Detroit Lions fan, I hope he goes to the Bears, actually.

But really, who am I kidding?

Fantasy Football Preview: Chicago Bears in Week 13

Note: The opinions expressed here are my takes on each player’s individual matchup. As always, use your best judgment and conduct your own research on who to start or bench each week. You know your individual team and/or league situation better than anyone else.

Caleb Hanie(notes), QB

Hanie had a solid 20.16 fantasy point performance last week against the Oakland Raiders despite throwing three interceptions during the game. He looks to have a favorable matchup this week against the Kansas City Chiefs who are giving up 16.74 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season. He still does not have enough experience to warrant a start however.

Matt Forte(notes), RB

While averaging 15.20 fantasy points per game, Forte has cooled off in the past couple of weeks. He scored just 8.40 fantasy points last week against the Raiders and shared time with Marion Barber(notes) who scored 6.30 fantasy points of his own. He does look to have a favorable matchup this week against the Chiefs who are giving up 22.35 fantasy points per game to running backs this season. Even if he splits touches again this week, he should at least put up totals just below his average.

Roy Williams, WR

I am including Williams this week because of the five targets he got from Hanie last week against the Raiders. With the Chiefs giving up 21.09 fantasy points per game to wide receivers and the I believe Williams could be one of the sleeper picks of the week.

Johnny Knox(notes), WR

Knox has been red hot these last two weeks scoring 15.70 fantasy points against the San Diego Chargers and 20.50 fantasy points last week against the Raiders. He has a favorable matchup this week against the Chiefs and even with Hanie under center; he looks poised for another big week this week.

Kellen Davis(notes), TE

With just 12 receptions all season, it is hard to consider Davis a viable fantasy tight end option. Strangely enough, he leafs the team with four touchdown catches. He had a solid 8.50 fantasy point game last week against the Raiders, but has been too inconsistent all season to warrant a start. I would suggest looking for more reliable options this week.

Robbie Gould(notes), K

Averaging 10.50 fantasy points per game, Gould is a very solid fantasy kicking option this season. He scored 12.00 fantasy points last week against the Raiders and looks to have a favorable matchup this week against the Chiefs. Kansas City is giving up 8.50 fantasy points per game to kickers this season leading me to believe he will put up a total near his average this week.

Defense

Averaging 12.00 fantasy points per game, the Chicago Bears’ team defense are one of the top in fantasy football. The scored only 6.00 fantasy points last week against the Raiders but hope to rebound this week against the Chiefs. Kansas City is allowing 9.90 fantasy points per game to team defense leading me to believe they will perform close to their average this week.

With Jack Del Rio Fired and More to Come, Chicago…

Despite Lovie Smith’s overall success as head coach of the Chicago Bears in his eight years (70-53, three division titles, one conference title, two NFC Championship appearances), he and his coaches have consistently been on the proverbial “hot seat” that so many coaches find themselves on each and every year. Of course, the main reason is because in the NFL, winning is everything. If you don’t win, you get fired.

There was talk last season that Lovie Smith and his staff were on the verge of being given the ol’ heave-ho unless the Bears won. Well, a division title and a conference championship appearance was enough to keep everyone in town for at least another year. This season, with the Bears sitting at 7-4 and in the thick of what proves to be an exciting playoff race, for once, Lovie and co. aren’t on the verge of joining the unemployed. It’s kind of nice, really.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars announcing they have fired coach Jack Del Rio and the Indianapolis Colts firing their defensive coordinator Larry Coyer, the coaching carousel is officially spinning. My question is how much must your organization want you gone when they fire you when your team is 0-11 and is a disaster on both sides of the ball? I’m sure they have their reasons.

I have a roller coaster opinion of Lovie Smith. There is no doubt in my mind he is a man of high class and character and I appreciate having someone like that leading the team I cheer for. However, there have been times when I just don’t understand his methods —or lack thereof. But going back to the point at the beginning of the article: winning is everything in this league. You’re never going to win all the time, but generally speaking, a 70-53 record is getting the job done.

At the end of the day, I’m happy Lovie Smith is the coach of the Chicago Bears. And I’m happy he’ll be around for at least one more year.
