The Bears Take a Closer Look at Shea McClellin: A…

With just days before the draft, the Chicago Bears are still working hard to determine just who they are going to take. Phil Emery has said that the moves made in free agency have given the team the flexibility to either go with strength or the ability to fill what the team deems a need. They are now taking a special interest in Shea McClellin. Just how would McClellin add to the defense this season?

McClellin comes from the Boise State Broncos. He had a pretty impressive showing in the 40 yard dash at the NFL Combine this year. He ran the dash in 4.63, placing second behind Bruce Irvin. His overall grade was 58.5, which placed him as a draftable player.

In his last season with the Boise State Broncos, he played as a 3-4 outside linebacker, which is something the Bears are looking for. He also clocked time as a 4-3 defensive end and as inside linebacker. McClellin seems to be an all-around solid player. The only problem is that the Bears have already had private practices and met with other players who seem more solid.

McClellin is small for his position, and he may not do as well against double teams in the NFL. Whitney Mercilus has more of a chance to shine in that respect. If the Bears are willing to go with someone who is smaller, Melvin Ingram would be the best pick out of the bunch.

It isn’t that McClellin is bad, it just seems that the Bears have better options out there. Why settle for someone when they can get someone who is great? Mercilus can play 3-4 or 4-3 just as well, if not better. Ingram did extremely well at the combine and has plenty of flexibility, including the ability to fit into a 3-4 scheme.

Phil Emery said that the team is looking at a core of seven players, but would not give any indication as to who he placed at the top of the list. Given his tremendous scouting ability, it seems unlikely that the Bears will go with McClellin.

Chicago Bears sign guard Chilo Rachal

The Chicago Bears improved their offensive line depth by signing Chilo Rachal today. Chilo Rachal started 38 games at right guard the last four years for the San Francisco 49ers. But he made most of those starts when the 49ers were a losing team.

This signing would be a lot more exciting if Rachal hadn’t started only three games last year when the 49ers were 13-3.

Rachal was replaced in the starting lineup early last season by a relative journeyman, but he was a second-round draft pick in 2008. Someone at some time thought Chilo Rachal was a top prospect, something that can’t be said of too many Bears offensive linemen in recent years.

The above story also bills him as a powerful straight-ahead run blocker, which the Bears could use, but says he is poor at pass blocking or pulling and blocking on the move. That does not bode well. Many Bear linemen have struggled with blocking schemes the last two years; when the Bears showed improvement in the second half of the 2010 season, that was after line coach Mike Tice simplified many of the blocking assignments.

He should do the same in 2012. I don’t know if Chilo Rachal can help Jay Cutler stay upright, but he should help Chicago running backs. At worst, he is a better backup than the Bears had before. At best, he’s a slight improvement in the starting lineup, mostly in the running game.

Chicago Bears Sign Linebacker Geno Hayes:…

What is generally interesting about the Chicago Bears offseason acquisitions is that one, they seem to be solid players in their own right, but also that they seem to make a whole lot of sense for the Bears in the long run. In opposition to other Bear offseasons, I don’t see the presence of too many players that have the moniker of “if this guy plays to what we all thought his potential was, he’ll be a steal.” The players that Phil Emery has been bringing in all seem to bring past success and future promise– not one or the other. While I admit to being no kind of expert on these players, the Bears most recent acquisition –linebacker Geno Hayes — seems to fit right in.

My exposure to what Hayes can and can’t do is limited. I’ve seen him play a few games and watched him pop up on highlights from time-to-time, but I don’t have a working knowledge of what he plays like on a game-to-game basis as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan would. I’ve looked over his stats from his time with the Buccaneers and I have to say that I’m excited he is on board. In 56 games (42 starts), Hayes registered 334 tackles, 36 tackles-for-loss, seven sacks, four interceptions, 16 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. I’ll let any Buccaneers fans burst my excitement bubble if there is some terrible downside with which I am unfamiliar, but for now, it looks like a really nice acquisition.

As Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs begin to escalate in their respective ages, there has been concern among Bears fans that the team needed to begin considering –potentially drafting — their future replacements. I’m not suggesting that Hayes automatically fits that bill, but at only 24, and having the stats that he does, he certainly looks like a viable candidate.

What I have really enjoyed about the Bears free agent signings is that they are filling many of what would have been draft needs. This doesn’t mean these positions will be neglected in the draft, but it will allow the Bears to have a much more focused draft. While I’ve been every-which-way on the direction the Bears should take in the first round of the draft, they are lessening the number of directions by all of their signings. While I didn’t expect a linebacker in the first round, it is still nice to see them upgrade the position.

Now we can just wait for the offensive linemen to pour in.

2012 Chicago Bears Schedule Posted: A Fan Reaction

The NFL has released the 2012 schedule, and the Chicago Bears will have a tough road ahead of them if they hope to make the postseason. Between three Monday night games and tough competition in the NFC North, the Bears have their work cut out for them. The first game may be the key to giving the team the boost that they need to get them through the season and make it to the playoffs.

Season Opener May Provide a Confidence Boost

The Bears will host the Indianapolis Colts in their first game of the year. With a new head coach and a new starting quarterback, the Colts may not be as steady for the first game as they may be later in the season. It is presumed, of course, that Andrew Luck will go to the Colts in the first round of the draft. Constant comparisons to Peyton Manning won’t do much to calm the rookie’s nerves in his NFL debut. Look for the Bears to have a strong pass rush this game.

Monday night games present challenges

The Bears have three Monday night games this season. They will meet the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, and the San Francisco 49ers in the three games. None of the teams will be easy to beat, but expect the Lions game to be especially brutal. Neither team has forgotten the ugly game last year; D.J. Moore was ejected from the game, and there were plenty personal fouls accrued on both sides of the field. The game won’t just be about bruised egos from last season; both teams are contenders this year. It may just turn out to be the best Monday night game of the season.

NFC North Will Be A Tough Conference

The Lions are expected to do as well as last season or better, and the Green Bay Packers are still the Packers, so the four games that the Bears have against the teams won’t be easy victories. Green Bay will host the Bears in the second game of the season, and Chicago will only have a few days rest between the opener and this game. The only break that the Bears may get will be in the two games against the Minnesota Vikings, since this season should be a rebuilding year for them. The Bears will meet all three other teams in the conference in the final four weeks of the regular season, with their last game being played in Detroit.

Bears Regular-Season Schedule

Chicago Bears Spring Workout Preview: A Fan's…

The Chicago Bears have started their voluntary, offseason workouts today, though the practices will be somewhat different than last year. The new NFL regulations have taken effect, which change the terms of the practice. There will also be some familiar faces back despite injuries or lack of contracts, and at least one noticeable absence. Here is a preview of what to expect from the offseason program.

Changes in Program

New regulations this year will limit the voluntary practices to nine weeks. Previously, they could last as long as 14 weeks. During the first two weeks, players can participate in drills, but they are not allowed to handle the football. The exception for quarterbacks allows them to practice passing, but not to other players. No one is allowed to wear a helmet on the field until the final four weeks, and one-on-one drills between members of the offense and defense are not allowed.

Essentially, players are not allowed to participate in contact football during the offseason practices. The rules were enacted as part of the collective bargaining agreement last year, and are designed to prevent injuries to players. The NFL has come under close scrutiny for injuries due to several lawsuits by former players alleging that the league did not do enough to prevent serious injuries and traumas over the years.

Chris Conte Returns

Chris Conte will be back to practice after suffering from a foot injury he received in the Seattle Seahawks. His injury, a Lisfranc injury, usually requires surgery to heal. Conte was lucky; he was able to recover without having to go under the knife.

Matt Forte Holds Out

Forte has not been quiet this offseason about his feelings regarding his contract. The Bears slapped him with a franchise tag, and have not yet signed him to the long-term deal that he is hoping for. After losing his cool on Twitter, it was assumed that he had simmered down a bit. Now, he is skipping the workouts, and may possibly miss part of training camp if he is not satisfied with the way the team handles his contract.

Kahlil Bell to Participate Regardless of Status

Bell is a restricted free agent, and the Bears tendered an offer of $1.26 million. He has vowed to take part in the practices whether he is signed or not. Bell actually stepped in for Matt Forte at the end of last season when he suffered an injury. Even though Forte has always seemed like a team player, Bell ends up looking like the classier guy in the contract situation.

David Terrell, Chicago Bears Former Wide Receiver,…

David Terrell, Chicago Bears Former Wide Receiver,…

David Terrell Chicago Bear Domestic Battery

David Terrell, former Chicago Bear.

A former Chicago Bears wide receiver was ordered held on $10,000 bond Saturday after he was charged with battery.

David Terrell, 33, was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery after he allegedly grabbed his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend in his high-rise apartment in the 1700 block of South Michigan Avenue on Chicago’s Near South Side early Friday, the Chicago Tribune reports. Terrell allegedly told the woman he would throw her off the balcony of his apartment “and say you jumped.”

According to CBS Chicago, the woman checked into an area hospital and contacted police after leaving Terrell’s apartment and was treated for bruises on her neck, chest and arms.

Terrell, who played four seasons with the Bears and one with the Denver Broncos, was arrested Friday afternoon and appeared in court Saturday.

Terrell’s attorney says his client is innocent, ABC Chicago reports. He is slated to return to court April 30.

Yahoo! Sports notes that Terrell was a first-round draft pick by the Bears in 2001. Though widely hyped, many feel he was “one of the biggest draft busts” in the NFL. He has previously been cited for a number of driving infractions including speeding, driving without insurance and driving on a suspended license.

David Terrell's Battery Arrest is a Sad…

David Terrell, the former wide receiver for the Chicago Bears, is making headlines in Chicago once again. He has been arrested for battery after allegedly grabbing his ex-girlfriend and threatening to throw her off of a balcony. It is a sad chapter in the life of a player who once held so much promise.

Terrell played for the University of Michigan, and joined the Chicago Bears in 2001 as their first-round pick; he was the eighth pick overall. Though there was much hype and hope surrounding the rookie, he is widely thought of as one of the biggest draft busts in the NFL.

He did little to live up to his potential while with the Bears. He only had nine touchdowns in his four seasons with the team, and caught the ball just 128 times. The Bears eventually got rid of Terrell, and he joined the Denver Broncos for one season. He only played one game while in Denver. That would be his last season in the NFL.

Terrell was also known for stirring up trouble. Even after his one-game season in Denver, he was quoted as saying, “Terrell Owens is not better than me. Keyshawn Johnson is not better than me. Randy Moss is not better than me. The only person better than me is me.” No one was impressed by such wild statements. A poll of Bears fans showed that 65 percent approved of the team’s decision to release him.

Off the field, he was known for his trouble behind the wheel. He was cited by police numerous times for speeding, driving without insurance, driving on a suspended license, and negligent driving. He was also arrested for failure to appear in court in connection with his driving citations.

Now David Terrell has found himself in more hot water than any of his minor scrapes with the law. He was held on $10,000 bond, and has been charged with misdemeanor battery. The charge may not sound serious, but what his ex-girlfriend has accused him of is. According to her, Terrell grabbed her, saying “I’ll throw you off the balcony and say you jumped.”

Terrell went from having a promising career in the NFL to having his mugshot plastered across the internet. It is a hard fall for the former first-round draft pick, hopefully this time he will clean up his act.

Chicago Bears Sign Lance Briggs to Contract…

I guess the Chicago Bears have had their fill of potential future holdouts.

There was no indication that Lance Briggs didn’t want to play in Chicago after his contract expired at the end of next season, but the Bears went ahead and signed him to a one-year extension now. Being the Bears fan I am, and having had the privilege of watching Lance Briggs play linebacker for seven years, it’s nice to see the Bears give him a slight extension. Though, I am curious if Matt Forte grits his teeth a little harder every time the Bears extend a contract to one of their own? While there is obviously a difference in extending someone for one year as opposed to a long-term deal, we all know Forte isn’t exactly the happiest Bear on the block these days.

Back to Briggs. Last season, he led the Bears with 147 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss, one interception, and two forced fumbles. Not bad Lance, not bad at all.

During this busy offseason for the Bears, most of the focus has been on the offensive side of the ball. While I would argue the Bears needed more work on that end, the defense isn’t some elite unit. Every year, the rumblings of “Brian Urlacher and Briggs won’t be here forever” get a little louder. It seems each season the requests to start drafting eventual replacements at the positions get louder and more frequent. Well, we know Briggs will be around for at least two more years.

It’s true, though. The Bears aren’t going to have these guys forever. It feels like Urlacher has been playing middle linebacker since I can remember. As it stands, he’s 33. We don’t know how much longer he is going to be playing at the high level he does. Briggs is the same way. While I understand the want to look at drafting future replacements, the Bears have much more urgent positions to address in the draft. That doesn’t mean I don’t think they should draft a linebacker or two, I just wouldn’t be dropping my first-round pick on one. Not yet, anyway.

We don’t know how long Briggs and Urlacher will be playing at the levels they are, nor do we know how long they’ll be Bears, but I’m perfectly glad Briggs will be around for at least two more years.

Jay Cutler Laughs at Bears' Super Bowl…

If Chicago Bears fans have thoughts of a Super Bowl appearance this year, Jay Cutler squashed those hopes in a recent interview. When asked about the chances of the Bears making it to the big game this season, Cutler laughed, though he quickly added that he felt that the team was heading in the right direction. Does Cutler’s initial response show that the offense won’t be playoff-ready this season?

Cutler did get two things to help him this season; he will be playing old teammate Brandon Marshall again and he got his hand-picked choice for quarterbacks coach in Jeremy Bates . He has worked extensively with both Marshall and Bates, which should make him feel a bit better about his chances on the field this year.

At the heart of the matter when it comes to the offense is the team’s ability to protect their quarterback from being sacked. Last season alone, Cutler was sacked 23 times . That number is down from 2010 when he was sacked a total of 52 times, but remember that he sat out the end of the season in 2011 with a broken thumb. His sack total would have gone up had he played the full season. Protecting your quarterback is one of the first rules of a good offense, and the Bears haven’t gotten that right in some time.

The Bears and GM Phil Emery have made significant moves on the offense with both players and coaches. What they haven’t done is secured a line that will help Cutler do his job. The team is relying on Gabe Carimi to be fully recovered from last season’s injury. They also released Frank Omiyale without a thought of replacing him . Coach Lovie Smith has said that the they are also satisfied with J’marcus Webb despite his performance last season. Banking on injured players, refusing to replace players that have been let go, and accepting mediocre performance may be why Cutler scoffed at the potential for his offense to lead the team to a Super Bowl this season.

If anyone has a feel for how the offensive line is shaping up so far for the upcoming season, it is Jay Cutler. He has the potential to be a great quarterback for the Bears, but until Lovie Smith and Phil Emery create a team that Cutler feels safe with, he may be just be right to laugh at the team’s chances for a championship season.

Question marks for Bears as 2012 prep begins

DES PLAINES, Ill. (AP) It might be a while before the Chicago Bears get a look at all the pieces general manager Phil Emery has assembled in free agency for next season.

The Bears begin their voluntary offseason program with players Monday and it’s possible they won’t have running back Matt Forte, linebacker Brian Urlacher or running back Kahlil Bell available. Forte can’t participate unless he signs his franchise free-agent tender of $7.74 million, and the same is true of Bell, who has received a tender offer as a restricted free agent.

”In the offseason, I tell the guys if you have an issue with your contract, out of season is the time to work on those things,” coach Lovie Smith said Tuesday before the team’s Ed Block courage award was presented to Urlacher. ”That’s what Matt is going through right now. I’m on record of how we feel about Matt Forte. We start up Monday. Hopefully he’ll be there. If he’s not, then we’re going to go to work with the players that we have there. We have a lot of time.”

Urlacher’s participation will likely be spotty. He suffered a sprained left knee in the regular-season finale and did not need surgery, but he is not going to rush his recovery.

”I’ve still got 3 1/2 months, four months,” Urlacher said. ”So I’m definitely not in a big hurry. I’ve done everything up to this point that I’ve been asked to do. I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been told to do. Like I’ve said … when the time is right I’ll be ready to play. I’m not worried about it. It’s not an issue. I’ll be good to go.”

The Bears do not have minicamp for the full team until the end of their offseason program, in late June. The late minicamp could also benefit tackle Gabe Carimi, who is coming off knee surgery, and guard Chris Williams, whose 2011 season ended due to a dislocated wrist.

It’s less certain when wide receiver Johnny Knox will be available after December back surgery following an injury against Seattle.

”He’s making a lot of progress,” Smith said. ”From the time we saw him on the field lying on the field to where he is right now, you know, making the same type of progress throughout. Things should be OK for him. As far as when he’ll be back 100 percent and ready to go, I don’t know that.”

Urlacher is ecstatic over the moves the team has made in Emery’s first free agency signing period. The Bears acquired eight new players including wide receiver Brandon Marshall, and signing five of their own free agents.

”It’s exciting to see us making moves like that because we haven’t done that a lot in the past,” Urlacher said. ”We needed a receiver, we got a receiver. We still have the draft. All the pressure has been taken off of our draft with what he’s done so far.”

Urlacher isn’t worried about Marshall’s off-field problems or his battle with borderline personality disorder. Urlacher thinks Marshall’s close relationship with quarterback Jay Cutler will help.

”I’m not worried about him,” Urlacher said. ”Jay is a straightforward guy. He’s been around Brandon. So I don’t think there will be an issue.

When the season does start, Urlacher said game officials could be scrutinizing defensive players’ hits even more as a result of the New Orleans Saints bounty case.

”It’s always touchy,” Urlacher said. ”It’s going be even more so after all this stuff went down.”

Notes: The award given to Urlacher is for inspiration, sportsmanship and courage in difficult situations. Urlacher’s mother, Lavoyda Lenard, died unexpectedly early last season. The award is voted on by Bears players. ”Any time your teammates give you an award, that’s a big deal,” Urlacher said.

“It’s always touchy,” Urlacher said. “It’s going be even more so after all this stuff went down.”

Notes: The award given to Urlacher is for inspiration, sportsmanship and courage in difficult situations. Urlacher’s mother, Lavoyda Lenard, died unexpectedly early last season. The award is voted on by Bears players. “Any time your teammates give you an award, that’s a big deal,” Urlacher said.
