Chicago Bears Take Versatile Defensive End Shea…

The Chicago Bears had a lot of needs heading into the 2012 NFL Draft. Among those needs were defensive line and offensive line. Amazingly enough, when the Bears pick finally rolled along at No. 19, only one offensive lineman was taken and virtually all of the top defensive lineman were still on the board. Which side of the ball would they choose to help first?

That question was answered when the Bears selected Shea McClellin. McClellin, a defensive end out of Boise State, is actually an incredibly diverse defensive player who has played middle linebacker, defensive end, and at the nickel spot for the Broncos during his career at Boise State. Most draft pundits had McClellin going as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

The Bears play a 4-3 defense so that presents some questions as to exactly where McClellan will play. He was knocked by those same draft analysts for being too small (260 lbs) to play at defensive end in a 3-4 defense, but in a 4-3 he might fit in just fine on the opposite side of the line from Julius Peppers (himself a 6’7″ 280 lb defensive end). McClellan is a 6’6″ giant who can use his length to get around offensive tackles to get to either Matt Stafford or Aaron Rodgers.

In any case, I like the pick. The Bears’ defense is a strong point for the team, but they are getting older. No matter where they slot McClellan, his youth and size will greatly help the Bears in an NFC North that contains two great offenses (Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions) and another team that has the best rusher in the league (Minnesota Vikings’ Adrian Peterson).

McClellan seems like an unselfish, team-first guy who will do anything required to help the team. His hustle and drive will fit in well with the Chicago Bears mentality. His ability to play multiple defensive positions indicates his intelligence and flexibility. Could he even play on special teams initially? Absolutely.

I’m happy with the direction of the Bears this off-season. They’ve been aggressive in free agency and with this first pick in the draft they seem to understand where they need to get stronger. I’m sure many Bears fans wanted them to go offensive line in the first round, but McClellin is a talent that they just couldn’t pass up. Let’s see what the Bears do in the rest of the draft.

David Terrell's Battery Arrest is a Sad…

David Terrell, the former wide receiver for the Chicago Bears, is making headlines in Chicago once again. He has been arrested for battery after allegedly grabbing his ex-girlfriend and threatening to throw her off of a balcony. It is a sad chapter in the life of a player who once held so much promise.

Terrell played for the University of Michigan, and joined the Chicago Bears in 2001 as their first-round pick; he was the eighth pick overall. Though there was much hype and hope surrounding the rookie, he is widely thought of as one of the biggest draft busts in the NFL.

He did little to live up to his potential while with the Bears. He only had nine touchdowns in his four seasons with the team, and caught the ball just 128 times. The Bears eventually got rid of Terrell, and he joined the Denver Broncos for one season. He only played one game while in Denver. That would be his last season in the NFL.

Terrell was also known for stirring up trouble. Even after his one-game season in Denver, he was quoted as saying, “Terrell Owens is not better than me. Keyshawn Johnson is not better than me. Randy Moss is not better than me. The only person better than me is me.” No one was impressed by such wild statements. A poll of Bears fans showed that 65 percent approved of the team’s decision to release him.

Off the field, he was known for his trouble behind the wheel. He was cited by police numerous times for speeding, driving without insurance, driving on a suspended license, and negligent driving. He was also arrested for failure to appear in court in connection with his driving citations.

Now David Terrell has found himself in more hot water than any of his minor scrapes with the law. He was held on $10,000 bond, and has been charged with misdemeanor battery. The charge may not sound serious, but what his ex-girlfriend has accused him of is. According to her, Terrell grabbed her, saying “I’ll throw you off the balcony and say you jumped.”

Terrell went from having a promising career in the NFL to having his mugshot plastered across the internet. It is a hard fall for the former first-round draft pick, hopefully this time he will clean up his act.

CHICAGO (STMW) – Former Chicago Bears wide receiver David Terrell was charged with domestic battery and was being held on $10,000 bond Saturday.

Terrell, 33, was arrested Friday about 1:40 p.m. after he allegedly grabbed a 25-year-old woman during an argument at his apartment in the 1700 block of South Michigan Avenue, said police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

The woman left the apartment and contacted police after she checked into Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, Mirabelli said. The woman had bruises on her neck, chest and arms, Mirabelli said, adding that she was treated and released.

The 6-foot-3, 212-pound former wide receiver is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail after a Saturday morning bond hearing, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office.

His next court date is scheduled for April 30.

Terrell’s attorney, Shady Yassin, said he expects his client will post bond and be released from jail by the end of Saturday. Yassin said he intends to prove Terrell is innocent.

Terrell, a former University of Michigan prospect selected 8th by the Bears in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft, played four seasons with the team before being cut after the 2004 season. He made an unsuccessful comeback attempt in 2005 with the Denver Broncos, but only played in a single game and caught no passes.

He finished his NFL career with 128 receptions for 1,602 yards and nine touchdowns.

Terrell’s best season was his rookie year, when he caught 42 passes for 699 yards and one touchdown — the same season the Bears exceeded expectations and posted a 13-3 record before the Philadelphia Eagles foiled the team’s title hopes in a divisional playoff upset.

AP Source: Broncos sign Caleb Hanie

March 24, 2012 (ENGLEWOOD, Colo.) —
A person familiar with the negotiations says the Denver Broncos have signed former Chicago Bears backup quarterback Caleb Hanie to a two-year deal to back up Peyton Manning.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hadn’t been announced by the team. ESPNChicago.com first reported the deal earlier Saturday.

Hanie, 26, who played at Colorado State, spent the last three seasons in Chicago. He replaced an injured Jay Cutler in the NFC championship two years ago and nearly rallied the Bears past the Packers. But he went 0-4 in place of Cutler last season, including at loss at Denver.

The Broncos signed Manning on Monday and then dealt Tim Tebow to the New York Jets. They also considered signing free agent Billy Volek.

The Washington Redskins signed former Chicago Bears free-agent safety Brandon Meriweather on Thursday.

The two-time Pro Bowler with the New England Patriots had been scheduled to visit the New York Jets on Thursday, according to the New York Daily News, and the Denver Broncos also were said to be interested.

Meriweather signed a two-year contract worth $6 million, according to the NFL Network.

He played 11 games for the Bears last season, starting four after back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons with the Patriots.

Bears coach Lovie Smith had said Meriweather’s late start with Chicago hurt him after getting cut last year by the Patriots, who had been his only team his first four years in the league.

“He came in and did some good things. It’s tough when you haven’t had an offseason,” Smith told reporters. “I know no one had an offseason last year, but he came into a tough situation and was always in a catch-up mode.”

The Jets now will be playing catch-up after thinking they had a shot to sign Meriweather.

They are still reportedly pursuing safeties LaRon Landry and Reggie Nelson. They also lost safety Brodney Pool, who signed with the Cowboys on Thursday.

In his five-year career, Meriweather has 12 interceptions, two sacks, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and 288 tackles.

Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears say they knew of…

The Dolphins had been speaking to the Chicago Bears about a trade involving Brandon Marshall long before a woman accused him of punching her in the face at a nightclub early Sunday morning — a claim Marshall’s attorney has denied.

Though Marshall has not been charged, that incident is believed to have been the final tipping point for the Dolphins to part ways with the receiver, according to a source.

Even without that incident, the Dolphins have been exploring a trade since February because of serious concerns about Marshall’s history of off-field drama and concerns about how he would accept a role in coach Joe Philbin’s offense, which emphasizes spreading the ball around instead of focusing primarily on a No. 1 receiver.

The Dolphins and Bears said Wednesday they were aware of the incident when they made the trade Tuesday, which netted the Dolphins third-round draft picks in 2012 and 2013.

“We decided to move forward with the trade,” Bears general manager Phil Emery said. “We have high expectations for Brandon as a Bear.”

The Dolphins declined to comment further.

Marshall might be questioned by police and the NFL about the alleged incident, and could be subject to discipline under the league’s personal conduct code, which allows commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend players for off-field behavior.

An incident last April, in which Marshall was stabbed in the abdomen by his wife, was not held against him by the NFL because he was considered the victim. Marshall has been suspended by the NFL once before, for one game in 2008, and he has had arrests over the years for disorderly conduct and drunken driving. He also has been involved in several incidents of alleged domestic violence.

Marshall previously testified he “probably escalated the situation” at a Denver club where he, teammate Darrant Williams and other Denver players were celebrating before Williams was fatally shot while riding a limousine in 2007.

The latest incident allegedly occurred at 3:50 a.m. Sunday outside the Marquee, a nightclub in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. The accuser filed a complaint Monday evening and police are investigating.

Marshall’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, said Marshall and his friends were not involved.

“Brandon Marshall was the keynote speaker at a charitable event in New York,” Steinberg said in a statement. “After the event was over, he, his wife and close friends attended a function at a local club. While at the function a fight broke out NOT involving Mr. Marshall or his friends.”

Steinberg said Marshall’s wife was hit in the face with a bottle, while she and Marshall were leaving the club, and that she was hospitalized for “serious injuries.”

The incident started when Marshall allegedly got into an argument with a group of friends celebrating a birthday at the club, the New York Post reported.

According to The Post, Christin Myles, the woman celebrating a birthday, left an upper floor of the club, and upon returning, was told to wait because Marshall was allegedly involved in a fight with an unidentified football player. She was allegedly told that both players were removed from the club.

Myles went outside and saw Marshall and the unidentified player arguing with her friends. Marshall then allegedly punched Myles in the left eye, leaving her with a black eye, according to The Post, which said it was unclear if Marshall intended to hit Myles or somebody else.

Chicago Bears Not Keeping Caleb Hanie: A Fan…

Today it was reported that the Chicago Bears will not be bringing Caleb Hanie back next season to serve as a back-up for Jay Cutler, according to a report from ESPN. The Chicago Bears continue making moves this off-season that just seem to make sense. This may actually take some time for fans to get used to, and it may actually give us hope for seasons to come.

How could any of us forget last season when Jay Cutler was out with a broken thumb and Hanie was brought in to take his place? Despite a dismal showing at his first two games, Lovie Smith stayed true to his stubborn ways and announced the Hanie was his man . It was maddening to see the Bears insist that they would not look elsewhere for a successful quarterback, even though Donovan McNabb could have easily filled the slot.

Smith seems to have changed his tune for this season, admitting that “we do need to get ourselves in a better position at that backup quarterback position.” The move to find a stronger back-up isn’t new; the topic has been getting a lot of attention in the sports world even before today’s announcement. It is a bit surprising to hear Lovie admit he may have been wrong, even though it is essentially admitting that his coaching decisions cost the Bears a possible trip to the playoffs.

It looks at the moment that Josh McCown, who has the third quarterback spot, will be back on the roster for the next season. He will not be getting promoted to back-up, so who will our new QB be? Some are saying that the Bears should bring Kyle Orton back for the position . That seems like a risky move considering Orton couldn’t hack it in Denver any more than he could in Chicago the first time. With Jay Cutler’s propensity for injuries, there is a very real chance that any back-up we have will see some significant time on the field.

There is no doubt that the Bears need to find a veteran with experience for the empty quarterback slot, I am just hoping that we don’t keep repeating our same mistakes by bringing back a player who wasn’t good enough for us before.

Fan Perspective: the Chicago Bears Will Not…

What is the Chicago Bears future? They have a good quarterback in Jay Cutler and great running back in Matt Forte. The Bears seemed to be headed for post season play when Cutler and Forte got injured.

The Bears, as usual can’t seem to identify a franchise player like Forte other than to let things hang until the only answer will be a franchise tag.

Who won the Super Bowl this year? The team that won it was the New York Giants. The reason that the Giants won is that they have gotten the drift that you need a “team” to win, not “spot” great players who are more interested in themselves than the team or conversely a team that will not admit when a player is above average and should be rewarded such as Forte.

Chicago Bears Injuries

There were major injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte. Now in addition to the financial aspect of the problem of the player’s involvement there is a question no one knows the answer to and that is “How much have the injuries affected the players?”

Change of Playing Style

In the NFC the San Francisco 49ers not only showed team spirit and what it can do but some different forms of play brought in from college. The same system and team spirit was exhibited by the Denver Broncos and you can laugh all you want but they are here to stay.

That has been a problem for the Bears over the years and it stands even firmer with Lovie Smith. Change has to be made quickly and the Bears just don’t change and adjust. They try to dictate no matter how poorly what they are trying to do works.

The future of the Chicago Bears does not look bright, at least to me.

The Bears have their best players in limbo based on either health or pay and in the area of health there are questions.

Lovie Smith is a coach who does not make quick decisions and that I believe has hurt the team. Further our great defense is getting older.

Things just don’t look good.

Angelo fired as Bears’ GM after team crumbles

The Chicago Bears won four division titles and reached the Super
Bowl while Jerry Angelo was general manager. They also crumbled in
a big way this season.

Now Angelo’s out.

He was fired Tuesday following a team collapse marked by
injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte and a drug scandal involving
Sam Hurd.

Angelo had been on the job 11 years, but the Bears called for
change after an 8-8 season. A questionable draft record and an
inability to fill big holes, particularly on offense, led to his
ouster.

His dismissal comes after a wild season in which the Bears at
one point seemed a lock to make the playoffs. A five-game losing
streak spoiled a 7-3 start, keeping Chicago out of the playoffs for
the fourth time in five years, and Angelo wasn’t the only one on
his way out on Tuesday.

The Bears also confirmed that offensive coordinator Mike Martz
and quarterbacks coach Shane Day won’t be back. Martz had an
expiring contract, and there had been plenty of speculation he
would be gone after two seasons.

Coach Lovie Smith, however, appears safe for now. The team said
on its website he will remain in his job and “continue to evaluate
his coaching staff.”

Angelo was signed through the 2013 season, but he was undone on
a number of fronts. The next GM will inherit a team that could use
help on the offensive and defensive lines, at wide receiver and in
the secondary. Forte’s rookie contract is up. Pro Bowl linebacker
Lance Briggs would like a new one even though he has two years left
on his six-year deal.

Still, the Bears believe they can make a run next season. Angelo
won’t be the one overseeing it, though.

“I have tremendous respect for him and am sorry to see him go,”
Smith said in a statement. “But I also will embrace the opportunity
that comes with change. As I said yesterday, we have an excellent
core in place. I look forward to working with a new general manager
to bring a championship to Chicago.”

Cutler broke his right thumb trying to help make a tackle
following an interception during a victory over San Diego on Nov.
20, and the Bears didn’t win again until the season-finale at
Minnesota on Sunday.

It didn’t help that Forte sprained a ligament in his right knee
against Kansas City on Dec. 4, leaving the offense without its two
best players. Those would be blows for any team, but they were
crippling for Chicago. Throw in Hurd’s arrest on federal drug
charges in mid-December, and what looked like a promising season
turned into a disaster for the team and organization.

The injuries exposed a glaring lack of depth as the Bears
tumbled out of playoff contention.

The low point might have been the loss at Denver when Marion
Barber ran out of bounds late in regulation. That stopped the
clock, giving the Broncos enough time to tie the score. If that
weren’t enough, he lost a fumble in overtime, helping set up the
winning field goal.

Meanwhile, backup quarterback Caleb Hanie was a bust filling in
for Cutler, going 0-4 as the starter before the Bears turned to
Josh McCown.

Chicago claimed Kyle Orton off waivers after Cutler went down,
but Kansas City had priority and got him. The Bears then brought in
Josh McCown, and Angelo left himself open to second-guessing when
he decided not to go after Donovan McNabb once Minnesota let him
go.

The lack of a reliable backup quarterback, continuing issues on
the offensive line and the inability to land a top-tier receiver
increased the heat on the general manager.

Roy Williams struggled to hold onto the ball and get open in his
first season with the Bears after an unsuccessful run in Dallas.
Hurd, another Cowboys import, was quickly waived after being
charged with trying to set up a drug-dealing network following his
arrest with more than a pound of cocaine.

The arrest only compounded Angelo’s problems. Now the Bears are
picking up the pieces.

For all the criticism, Angelo did have successes. The Bears won
those four division championships, including the 2006 team’s run to
the Super Bowl and last year’s trip to the NFC title game.

He traded for Cutler and signed Julius Peppers. But he also had
a spotty draft record that included such high-profile
disappointments as Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman.

Former first-rounder Chris Williams has mostly struggled, and
first-round pick Gabe Carimi missed most of his rookie season with
a right knee injury. Angelo also was unable to find a top receiver,
through the draft, a trade or free agency.

Chicago didn’t have anyone ready to step in when a solid but
aging line that helped the Bears reach the playoffs in 2005 and
2006 began to go downhill.

Martz called for deep drops and Cutler took repeated poundings.
That changed after Cutler made his feelings clear. The Bears
started getting the ball out of his hands quicker, handing the ball
off more to Forte and piling up wins. But just when it looked as if
they had saved their season, everything came apart.

Jerry Angelo fired as Bears’ GM

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Jerry Angelo was fired as the Chicago Bears‘ general manager Tuesday following a team collapse marked by injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte and a drug scandal involving receiver Sam Hurd.

Angelo had been on the job 11 years, a stretch in which the Bears reached one Super Bowl and advanced to another NFC championship game. An 8-8 record this season, a questionable draft record and an inability to fill big holes, particularly on offense, led to his ouster.

Bears roundup: 5 selected to represent NFC in Pro…

LAKE FOREST — Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was selected to his eighth Pro Bowl, while teammate Lance Briggs made it for the seventh year in a row.

Running back Matt Forte made his first Pro Bowl on Tuesday, hours after being placed on injured reserve because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee. Veteran cornerback Charles Tillman was also picked for the first time as was special teams contributor Corey Graham.

The five selections were the most for Chicago since it had eight in the 2006 season.

Urlacher is the sixth player in team history to be voted to eight Pro Bowls as a Bear. He is second on the team with 125 tackles behind fellow linebacker Briggs (140) and is tied for the lead with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Briggs became the fourth linebacker in franchise history to be selected to seven straight Pro Bowls, joining Hall of Famers Dick Butkus (eight in a row), Bill George (eight) and Mike Singletary (10).

Tillman has 11 pass break-ups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries to go with 107 tackles.

Cutler, Forte placed in IR

The Chicago Bears placed quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte on injured reserve on Tuesday, meaning they will miss the season finale at Minnesota this week.

The moves were hardly surprising given Chicago’s recent struggles.

The Bears (7-8) have lost five straight since Cutler broke his right thumb late in a win over San Diego on Nov. 20, and things took another bad turn two weeks later when Forte sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee against Kansas City.

Cutler, who was scheduled to have surgically inserted pins removed Tuesday, threw for 2,319 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Forte finished with 997 yards rushing and 490 receiving and was selected to his first Pro Bowl hours after being placed on IR. He’s the first Chicago running back to make it since Neal Anderson after the 1991 season.

With Cutler and Forte on IR, the Bears elevated defensive tackle Jordan Miller from the practice squad and signed guard Mansfield Wrotto.

Chicago also announced on its website that rookie offensive lineman Gabe Carimi had surgery Tuesday on his right knee to repair connective tissue around his patella and medial collateral ligament.

The first-round pick started the first two games before injuring his knee and briefly returned to practice before having an arthroscopic procedure on the knee in November.

He is expected to be ready before the start of training camp.

Cutler’s injury sent Chicago into a tailspin, knocking out of contention a team that appeared on its way to the playoffs after last year’s run to the NFC title game.

The Bears were eliminated with a loss at Green Bay on Sunday, but they were just about out of it by the time they arrived at Lambeau Field.

One reason was the lack of a reliable backup quarterback.

Chicago put in a waiver claim on Kyle Orton after Cutler went down, but Kansas City had priority and got him. The Bears wound up signing Josh McCown, who was coaching quarterbacks at a North Carolina high school, and passed on going after Donovan McNabb after Minnesota let him go.

Meanwhile, backup Caleb Hanie struggled and went 0-4 as the starter. McCown got the nod against the Packers and performed better, throwing for 242 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in his first NFL appearance since 2009, but the Bears saw their playoff hopes vanish in a 35-21 loss.

A healthy Forte might have made a difference, but his season ended when he took a hit to the knee against Kansas City. It didn’t help that backup Marion Barber committed costly mistakes in losses to the Chiefs and Denver the following week.

He had a touchdown catch in a 10-3 loss to Kansas City called off because he lined up illegally, forcing Chicago to settle for a field goal, and things only got worse for him the following week.

Barber got pushed out of bounds on a run near the end of regulation, helping give Denver enough time to tie the game. In overtime, his fumble led to the winning field goal.

Graham has 20 special teams tackles.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.
