It’s been a busy day for the Chicago Bears.

Just hours after the team announced that it had fired long time general manager Jerry Angelo, offensive coordinator Mike Martz announced his resignation. After his meeting with head coach Lovie Smith, Martz announced that he would not return to Chicago citing “philosophical differences over how the team could run its offense.” In a move not unrelated, quarterbacks coach Shane Day also chose to not return.

Right off the bat, commentators and fans alike wondered if Martz and the Chicago Bears could co-exist. Martz has always been a pass-oriented coach, while the Bears entire organization has always been committed to being a running team. Martz’s tenure was full of questions surrounding his play calling and pass/run balance. It seems that the discrepancy between Martz and the organization has finally caught up and they have chosen to go their separate ways.

While I’ve certainly had my questions about some of Martz’s decisions over the last two seasons, you wonder how this move will affect the development of the Bears offense. If I’m honest, prior to the injuries of Jay Cutler and Matt Forte, the offense looked decently threatening. For the first time in Martz’s time with Chicago, the offense starting looking like they were “getting it.” Combining with Jay Cutler’s clear improvement in the ball protection category, the offense looked like one that was good enough to carry the team far. It speaks to Jay Cutler’s quality that all of the Bears receivers virtually disappeared once he went down. Hopefully, the fact the players will all have to learn another offense won’t set back the progress they have made. Though, I have a feeling it will.

I would have liked to see Martz stick around. Had Cutler and company actually had a strong receiver to lead the corps and a consistent offensive line, I think they would have excelled. As it was, the final five games prior to Cutler’s injury saw the Bears score 39, 24, 30, 37, and 31 points. This was an offense that was getting the job done with virtually no consistent presence at receiver and an offensive line that varied greatly in quality from week to week. Whether that was Cutler, Forte, Martz, or a combination, the results were there. I hate to see Martz go right now. While I don’t have major problems with either, I think I would have rather seen Lovie Smith go before Martz.

It’s a business I guess.

Brian is a lifelong Chicago Bears fan, having lived in Illinois his entire life and having followed the NFL throughout.

Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo was fired on Tuesday after the Bears fell out of playoff contention and finished their season with an 8-8 record.

Speaking of the decision Chicago Bears president Ted Phillips called it a “a difficult day” before naming director of player personnel Tim Ruskell as the interim leader for the team.

In a statement Phillips revealed:

“It was almost 11 years ago that I hired Jerry Angelo as our general manager. I was proud of that decision then, and I think Jerry achieved a lot as our general manager in the last 10-plus seasons,” Phillips said. “On a personal level, I knew him very well. He’s a wonderful man, high character. I’ve enjoyed every day working with him. I’m gonna miss him. But at the same time, we need more. The decision was made that we need to keep up the pace with our division rivals.”

The Chicago Bears are not giving exact reasons for their decision to fire Jerry Angelo, although they have hinted at bad NFL draft day choices, instead the club is focusing on the future with a GM search already underway.

In a vote of confidence for head coach Lovie Smith the Chicago Bears front office are said to be looking for a new GM that will mesh well with Lovie while providing a “strong character and work ethic.”

According to Phillips the team will not rule out any candidates as long as they agree to keep Lovie Smith as the Chicago Bears head coach for the 2012 season.

Jerry Angelo was in his 11th season with the Chicago Bears as the teams general manager and the season was off to a quick 7-3 start until quarterback Jay Cutler broke his thumb, quickly ending the Bears playoff hopes.

Do you think the Chicago Bears needed to fire Jerry Angelo in order to build a better team for the future?

The Chicago Bears won four division titles and reached the Super
Bowl while Jerry Angelo was general manager. They also crumbled in
a big way this season.

Now Angelo’s out.

He was fired Tuesday following a team collapse marked by
injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte and a drug scandal involving
Sam Hurd.

Angelo had been on the job 11 years, but the Bears called for
change after an 8-8 season. A questionable draft record and an
inability to fill big holes, particularly on offense, led to his
ouster.

His dismissal comes after a wild season in which the Bears at
one point seemed a lock to make the playoffs. A five-game losing
streak spoiled a 7-3 start, keeping Chicago out of the playoffs for
the fourth time in five years, and Angelo wasn’t the only one on
his way out on Tuesday.

The Bears also confirmed that offensive coordinator Mike Martz
and quarterbacks coach Shane Day won’t be back. Martz had an
expiring contract, and there had been plenty of speculation he
would be gone after two seasons.

Coach Lovie Smith, however, appears safe for now. The team said
on its website he will remain in his job and “continue to evaluate
his coaching staff.”

Angelo was signed through the 2013 season, but he was undone on
a number of fronts. The next GM will inherit a team that could use
help on the offensive and defensive lines, at wide receiver and in
the secondary. Forte’s rookie contract is up. Pro Bowl linebacker
Lance Briggs would like a new one even though he has two years left
on his six-year deal.

Still, the Bears believe they can make a run next season. Angelo
won’t be the one overseeing it, though.

“I have tremendous respect for him and am sorry to see him go,”
Smith said in a statement. “But I also will embrace the opportunity
that comes with change. As I said yesterday, we have an excellent
core in place. I look forward to working with a new general manager
to bring a championship to Chicago.”

Cutler broke his right thumb trying to help make a tackle
following an interception during a victory over San Diego on Nov.
20, and the Bears didn’t win again until the season-finale at
Minnesota on Sunday.

It didn’t help that Forte sprained a ligament in his right knee
against Kansas City on Dec. 4, leaving the offense without its two
best players. Those would be blows for any team, but they were
crippling for Chicago. Throw in Hurd’s arrest on federal drug
charges in mid-December, and what looked like a promising season
turned into a disaster for the team and organization.

The injuries exposed a glaring lack of depth as the Bears
tumbled out of playoff contention.

The low point might have been the loss at Denver when Marion
Barber ran out of bounds late in regulation. That stopped the
clock, giving the Broncos enough time to tie the score. If that
weren’t enough, he lost a fumble in overtime, helping set up the
winning field goal.

Meanwhile, backup quarterback Caleb Hanie was a bust filling in
for Cutler, going 0-4 as the starter before the Bears turned to
Josh McCown.

Chicago claimed Kyle Orton off waivers after Cutler went down,
but Kansas City had priority and got him. The Bears then brought in
Josh McCown, and Angelo left himself open to second-guessing when
he decided not to go after Donovan McNabb once Minnesota let him
go.

The lack of a reliable backup quarterback, continuing issues on
the offensive line and the inability to land a top-tier receiver
increased the heat on the general manager.

Roy Williams struggled to hold onto the ball and get open in his
first season with the Bears after an unsuccessful run in Dallas.
Hurd, another Cowboys import, was quickly waived after being
charged with trying to set up a drug-dealing network following his
arrest with more than a pound of cocaine.

The arrest only compounded Angelo’s problems. Now the Bears are
picking up the pieces.

For all the criticism, Angelo did have successes. The Bears won
those four division championships, including the 2006 team’s run to
the Super Bowl and last year’s trip to the NFC title game.

He traded for Cutler and signed Julius Peppers. But he also had
a spotty draft record that included such high-profile
disappointments as Cedric Benson and Rex Grossman.

Former first-rounder Chris Williams has mostly struggled, and
first-round pick Gabe Carimi missed most of his rookie season with
a right knee injury. Angelo also was unable to find a top receiver,
through the draft, a trade or free agency.

Chicago didn’t have anyone ready to step in when a solid but
aging line that helped the Bears reach the playoffs in 2005 and
2006 began to go downhill.

Martz called for deep drops and Cutler took repeated poundings.
That changed after Cutler made his feelings clear. The Bears
started getting the ball out of his hands quicker, handing the ball
off more to Forte and piling up wins. But just when it looked as if
they had saved their season, everything came apart.

Gotta run!.

With the Chicago Bears deciding to fire general manager Jerry Angelo, it added another question to a team that already has a lot to be answered for next season.

With the Chicago Bears deciding to fire general manager Jerry Angelo, it added another question to a team that already has a lot to be answered for next season. Here’s a look at a few issues the Bears will have to address.

Find A New General Manager

I guess this is a pretty obvious one, but it’s certainly an important one. Angelo has been the Bears GM since 2001. It will take a little time for a new GM —whoever that might be—to settle in. Eric DeCosta ( Baltimore Ravens ), Les Snead ( Atlanta Falcons ) and Steve Keim ( Arizona Cardinals ) have been mentioned as possible replacements.

Signing Matt Forte

This is a question mark that shouldn’t exist, but it does. The Bears have seemingly torqued off Forte a bit by not signing him to a long-term contract prior to the season. With Forte’s injury in the latter half of this season, he made sure he was 100% before he returned. He was eventually placed on injured reserve. If the Bears lose Forte, it would set them back considerably. Ideally, the presence of a new GM will make Forte willing to negotiate again.

Does Lovie Smith Stay as Head Coach?

While the Bears have said that Lovie Smith is safe for the time being after firing Angelo, I’m not totally convinced. I’m constantly going back and forth on what I think about Smith and if I want him to stay the Bears coach. Prior to injuries, the Bears were putting together quite a solid campaign, so it’s hard to want to fire a coach because the team couldn’t recuperate from losing its two best players. However, many times a new general manager wants his own coaching staff in place. Whoever the new GM is, he will have to decide if he wants Lovie and company along for the ride.

Johnny Knox’s Back

Following Knox’s horrible injury against the Seattle Seahawks, no one was sure if Knox would play again. While subsequent surgery and news coming from Knox’s camp is that he will be able to, he’ll have to go through a great deal of rehab. After an injury like that, you never know how it will affect the long term development of a player. While Knox may not be the best receiver on the field, he’s been a major part of what passing threat the Bears have had. With no receiver showing much promise in house (other than maybe Earl Bennett), how Knox recovers will be important.

An Aging Defense

Players like Brian Urlacher, Julius Peppers, and Lance Briggs are tremendous football players. Though, they won’t be around forever. With the exception of a few players, the Bears defense is getting old. Not only has the defense not performed consistently well the last few years, but there doesn’t seem to be much depth behind them. Isreal Idonije and Henry Melton appear to be on the rise, but the linebackers don’t have much behind Urlacher and Briggs. The defensive backs, while not “old,” simply don’t get the job done on a consistent basis. This is something the new GM will have to address.

This certainly isn’t a catch-all list (Mike Martz, Roy Williams, and the offensive line could be added as well), but it begins to show how many questions this Bears team has as it enters the offseason.

Despite the Chicago Bears’ season ending with a meaningless game against the rival Minnesota Vikings, the game might have meant something in an indirect way.

First a little about the game itself. The Bears fell down 10-0 early on only to come back and make it 14-10 on a touchdown pass from Josh McCown to Roy Williams and an interception return touchdown by Charles Tillman. The Bears wouldn’t trail again. The Bears ended up with a 17-13 victory, but it took some timely plays (Julius Peppers blocking Ryan Longwell’s field goal attempt) and some fortunate ones (the Vikings botching a snap on another field goal attempt). The Bears tried to give this one away a couple of times. In the end, after D.J. Moore intercepted Joe Webb’s pass at the Chicago 30, it was over.

The game itself meant very little. Both teams were out of playoff contention and were locked into their respective third and fourth place finishes within the NFC North. However, one side note that could come out of this game is the settling of the Bears backup quarterback situation next season. While Josh McCown hasn’t performed extremely well in his two starts, he’s been surprisingly competent for a player who hasn’t played steadily for four years. With another solid enough start (15 for 25, 160 yards, one touchdown, and one interception), McCown has seemingly secured the backup position for next year. Combining his performance with Caleb Hanie’s lackluster one, McCown seems a little more secure.

Ideally, Jay Cutler won’t get injured next season and the choice of McCown won’t mean anything. My hope is that the Bears will try and add a piece or two (and sign Matt Forte to a long term contract) to a team that was legitimately strong prior to injuries. If the Bears can stay healthy and upgrade at a position or two, the Bears could make good on Brian Urlacher’s claim of the team vying for a championship.

For now, the victory is a dim ray of pleasure on an otherwise disappointing season.

Brian is a lifelong Chicago Bears, having lived in Illinois his entire life and having followed the NFL throughout.

• RECORD VS. SPREAD: Chicago 7-8; Minnesota 6-8-1.

• SERIES RECORD: Vikings lead 52-47-2. Last meeting, Bears beat
Vikings 39-10, Oct. 16.

• FACTS & FIGURES: Bears have won four straight in series,
their longest since six in a row from 1983-86 and longest overall
in this rivalry since Vikings won four straight over 1997 and 1998
seasons. … Bears have only won at Metrodome once since 2002,
19-16 in 2006. These teams didn’t play at site, now known as Mall
of America Field, last season because of roof collapse that forced
game outside to TCF Bank Stadium on University of Minnesota campus.
… Home team has won 16 of last 19 meetings. … Bears averaging
35.5 points in Past four games against Vikings. … In 10 games
(sprained right knee), had career-high 121 yards rushing last week.
Vikings have given up 302 yards rushing in Past two games. …
Bears have lost five straight since starting 7-3. … Vikings QB
Christian Ponder expected to play after being knocked out of last
game with concussion; RB Adrian Peterson is having surgery to
repair tears in ACL and MCL in left knee. … Vikings trying to
avoid matching worst finish in their 51-year history, 3-13 in 1984.
… Jared Allen has 18 1/2 sacks, four off NFL single-season record
and 2 1/2 short of team single-season record. … TE Jim
Kleinsasser will play in his last game, ending 13-year career. He
has played in more games than any TE in Vikings history.

LAKE FOREST — Although most of the blame for the Chicago Bears’ epic collapse is going the offense’s way, the defensive players insisted on taking a share of the responsibility for the six-game slide as well.

“Especially the last two weeks, 38 and 35 points, that’s not going to win very many games, I don’t care who’s playing quarterback for you,” Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher said.

“We haven’t gotten any takeaways in two weeks, no pressure on the quarterback. You’re not going to win a lot of games doing that. At times we’ve held up our end of the bargain, but at times we haven’t.”

The 73 points given up by the Bears is the worst two-game total for a Chicago defense in 13 years. Last week, the defense was dominated by a rag-tag Green Bay Packer offensive line missing its top three tackles.

“We were right there before things kind of started slipping away,” defensive end Israel Idonije said. “We were in a great position, and we were just really poised to do something special. For that to slip away makes it tougher.”

Last week, the Packers opened and closed the first half with touchdown drives against the Bears and put together three straight scoring drives to ice the game in the second half.

The Bears also faded in the second half in Week 15 at home, and to a team (Seattle) they were supposed to beat. The Seahawks outscored Chicago 31-0 in the second half. Still, 14 of those points were on Caleb Hanie interceptions returned for TDs, and the Bears defense did only surrender 286 total yards.

But no matter how they look at it, this latest stretch for Chicago has not been an enjoyable one.

“You can say we did our job,” Urlacher added, “but we won’t say we did.”

Cornerback Charles Tillman, recently named to his first Pro Bowl, said this defense — this team, for that matter — is close to being great.

“This team we have is very capable. This is a championship team,” Tillman said. “Even though we’re not going to make the championship this year, we’ll take a shot at it next year.”

When Caleb Hanie threw 36 passes in Chicago’s loss at Oakland, critics howled that Mike Martz called too many passes, even though the Bears also ran for 172 yards in that game.

Martz listened. Chicago has thrown fewer than 30 passes in all four games since. And lost all four.

By the way, for all those who think Martz passes too much, the Bears did throw at least 30 times in four of the five games before that Oakland game. And won all five of them.

So, to recap, in the last 10 games, Chicago is 4-1 when it throws at least 30 passes and 1-4 when it throws 28 or fewer, and people still say Mike Martz throws too much.

	Another history lesson:

When Ron Turner got ahold of Jay Cutler, the Bears threw 563 passes in 2009, the eighth-most in the NFL. Chicago ran 373 times that year, 29th-most in the NFL.

In one year, Chicago went from No. 8 in the NFL in pass attempts to dead last (No. 32) when Mike Martz took over as offensive coordinator, yet somehow his greatest fault was throwing too much? The Bears threw 52 times more than they ran last year. This year the Bears are 28th in the NFL in pass attempts and No. 8 in rushing attempts. In two years under Martz, the Bears have averaged 34.5 more passes in a season than rushing attempts, about one-sixth the 190-pass gap they had under Ron Turner. That’s about as balanced as you possibly can get running vs. passing.

And Mike Martz doesn’t just call runs. He makes those runs work. The Bears have averaged 4.5 yards per carry this year. That’s their highest mark since they also averaged 4.5 yards in both their 1985 Super Bowl season and their 14-2 year in 1986. The Bears also have more yards rushing in any season in the last 20 years except for 2005. They need 173 yards against Minnesota on Sunday to have their best running season of all in two decades.

And yet the Chicago Tribune web poll this week was whether or not Mike Martz was to blame for Chicago’s five-game losing streak. Forty-two percent said yes, that he should have adjusted the game plan more after Jay Cutler was injured.

Adjusted it to what? He kept calling more and more runs, but runs don’t lead to points without a few passes. The Bears ran all over Green Bay in the first half last week, yet still scored only three points until they turned Josh McCown loose in the second half.

The latest mock draft from AOL’s Sporting News suggests the Chicago Bears may look to take the Wisconsin Badgers junior C Peter Konz:

16. Chicago Bears: Peter Konz*, C, Wisconsin. Jay Cutler took a beating behind the Bears’ line in 2011. Konz is smart and versatile and should be able to start at either center or guard as a rookie.

The Bears have allowed an 8.6% sack rate (sacks per pass attempt) in the 2011 NFL Season, good for 8th worst in the NFL. Chicago parted ways with their long-time center Olin Kreutz before the 2011 season, opting to start Roberto Garza (32 years old ) at center and Chris Spencer (29) at guard.

SB Nation’s earlier mock drafts have also suggested the Bears might look Konz’s way even if they have the No. 20 pick. Mocking the Draft rates Konz as the top center in the 2011 draft class.

As the season draws to a disappointing end for the Chicago Bears, wide receiver Roy Williams says he hopes to be back in Chicago next season despite his struggles. I guess the question is whether or not the Chicago Bears and their fans want him. I’m not sure I do.

Perhaps it due to me being the Chicago Cubs fan that I am, but I’m normally a perpetual optimist. By this I mean that I get excited when any team that I follow signs just about anyone. I get intrigued at what the new player might bring to the table. This was the case with Roy Williams coming to Chicago. The last few years haven’t given us much hope to think Williams would resurrect his stellar 2006 campaign. Though, I continued to hope. The Bears were (are) in pretty dire need of a go-to receiver. The thought was that Williams could benefit from a reunification with Mike Martz. Well, that’s not what happened.

This season has been marred by inconsistencies, blown chances, and disappointment from Williams. He doesn’t see it that way saying “I feel like I made plays when the opportunity came. Of course everybody’s going to bring up the negatives, which is fine. But for the most part, I made enough plays, and I’ll be happy to sign, but if not, I’ll continue on elsewhere.”

I don’t claim to know all the intricacies of the game in terms of how well Williams was performing when he wasn’t the target of the play, but I’m not sure which tape he was watching that made him feel that he “made plays when the opportunity came.” He seemed to suffer from the same stone hands he suffered in Dallas. He certainly wasn’t the primary target the Bears were hoping he would be. 33 receptions for 447 yards isn’t getting the job done —at least not for someone that’s supposed to be a major part of the offense.

The problem is that the Bears are in such need of receivers. I’m inclined to say that Earl Bennett is the Bears best receiver, but he entirely disappeared when Jay Cutler went down. Johnny Knox certainly has some upside but is plagued by inconsistency. Devin Hester no longer seems to be getting better at the wide receiver position; he seems to be leveling out if not worsening. The Bears need someone like Williams to step into a major role for Jay Cutler. I’m just not sure Williams is the answer.

I really hoped he would be. Logic didn’t say he would be, it was just a hope. I think the Bears would be better off looking elsewhere.

In what has been a Jekyll and Hyde type season for the Chicago Bears, offensive coordinator Mike Martz has expressed interest in returning to Chicago next season. The question is do the Bears want him?

While you don’t want to lean too much on excuses, I think it’s fair to say much of the Bears’ collapse this season was due to the unfortunate amount of injuries they sustained to key players. When healthy, the Bears looked like a formidable opponent. The point is taken that injuries are a part of the game and a team should be prepared to carry on through them, but it can’t logically be thought that a team can sustain itself consistently when losing a starting quarterback and running back —especially when they are as essential as Jay Cutler and Matt Forte are to the Chicago Bears.

The point I’m getting at comes back around to offensive coordinator Mike Martz and his recent comments on his desire to stay in Chicago after this season. Essentially, you can’t really blame Martz for what happened to the offense post-Cutler and Forte. In reality, the Bears offense actually looked middle-to-upper tier prior to Cutler’s injury. During their five game winning streak prior to losing Cutler, the Bears scored 39, 24, 30, 37, and 31 points in those five games. Those are good point totals. Additionally, coming from someone that watches a whole lot of Bears football, these are nutty numbers for the Bears —who often have relied on a methodical, clock-controlling offense. Is this from Martz? That’s hard to say, but since he’s at the helm, he gets some credit. However, since Martz left his powerhouse St. Louis Rams in 2005, the highest yardage ranking his offenses have managed is 19th (2007 Detroit Lions) and the highest points scored ranking is 16th (’07 Lions). These certainly aren’t “offensive mastermind” numbers.

Most of the above looks like criticism. It’s not really meant to be, just some light number crunching. There are clearly countless unmentioned factors that go into all the numbers and stats listed above. Martz’s coaching history is full of gaudy numbers —mostly put up by the once-potent St. Louis Rams and their “Greatest Show on Turf.” The offenses he coaches don’t seem to have consistent results. Usually, the results come from having exceptional personnel on the field. While I will admit that to be the case in most instances throughout the NFL, Martz certainly falls into it. Regardless of why offenses succeed or fail, the Bears’ offense was unquestionably better this season prior to all the injuries. That’s enough for me to be alright with Martz coming back for another go. I also know it takes time for players to learn an offensive scheme.

As long as the Bears keep upgrading personnel and can stay healthy, they should continue to improve offensively. With that in mind, I’ll take Martz for another year.

The Bears were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16, and now experts are thinking they have lost all motivation heading into the season finale. Vinnie Iyer of AOL Sporting News has released picks for Week 17 in the NFL, and he thinks the Vikings will upend the Bears:

Each team is on its third quarterback, as this game has turned to Josh McCown vs. (most likely) Joe Webb. Matt Forte and Adrian Peterson are also out of this contest, leaving former Pac-12ers Kahlil Bell and Toby Gerhart to carry the load. McCown will find some success throwing downfield, but whether it’s Webb or rookie Christian Ponder, the Vikings’ quarterback will use his mobility to make more key plays in a low-scoring affair. Vikings 16, Bears 13.

I've been a Chicago Bears' fan for over 55 years. I've been a Chicago Cubs' fan for over 55 years. I'm one of the very few people who also cheer for the Chicago White Sox as well

I’ve been a Chicago Bears’ fan for over 55 years. I’ve been a Chicago Cubs’ fan for over 55 years. I’m one of the very few people who also cheer for the Chicago White Sox as well.

Ever since Chicago has had the Bulls I have been a supporter and every year I’ve come to love the Chicago Blackhawks more and more.

There are other Chicago teams I care about as well but my point is that coming from downstate Peoria, Illinois, I was raised to be for Chicago teams and as an adult have continued to wish them the best.

I tell you this to try and convince you that I have no reason at all to wish the Chicago Bears bad luck. I have no desire to try to be negative in my comments about the Bears or their future.

I am forced to say however that the Bears have no future for at least the next couple of years.

Matt Forte:

The Bears refused to lock Forte into a contract according to Melissa Isaacson of ESPN Chicago despite his prowess as a player. It appears from Isaacson’s comments that Forte felt the Bears didn’t feel loyal towards him. Then Forte was injured.

Now the Bears have an injured star whose future abilities are unknown. Further if you think Forte is “bearing” Chicago any love right now you may want to think again.

This is not a situation where the Bears are simply going to pick up next year where they left off physically or emotionally with their star running back.

Jay Cutler:

Jay Cutler was also injured and had to have thumb surgery. Is he going to be able to throw as well in the future?

Bears Receivers:

Johnny Knox was severely injured. Roy Williams was a huge disappointment. These are just a couple of issues.

Other Issues:

The Bears have ongoing problems with their offensive line and for the life of me I don’t know what has happened to the defense other than to say perhaps it’s time for a change, an “upgrade.” Man to man coverage is really better but you have to have a consistent pass rush and we don’t.

As far as the coaches go I respect Lovie Smith and Rod Marinelli. However I think Mike Martz has lost his touch and indeed think the Bears need a coaching overhaul. It is simply time for a change. We have seen many instances over the years particularly with quarterbacks where the coaching decision to change came way to slow.

As I look at all these issues, physical, emotional and functional, I don’t see a team capable of returning to sound competition for at least two years, probably three.
